7’aum Arivu

It translates to “7th Knowledge” or “7th Sense”… however, there is neither knowledge nor sense in the whole movie. Bodhidharma, a Tamil Pallava prince went to 6th century China as a Buddhist evangelist and founded the basics of martial arts in Shaolin Temple. I’m not getting into this disputed history… just a few thoughts after watching this outlandish movie.

  • Bodhidharma in his farewell speech tells his father that the travel is not only for evangelism but also to spy on China – I don’t see anything wrong with evangelism but “spying” on a big and distant country seemed ridiculous while Pallavas were forced to stop expanding their territory by Badami Chalukyas.

  • The route Bodhidharma travelled was shown as a land route via Himalayas as opposed to the sea one. I’m okay with any route actually but just because Bodhidharma was depicted with a red colored loosely wound shawl-like as top in paintings doesn’t mean he can pass the mighty Himalayan cold as a scantily clad mendicant… but, hey... who knows maybe he can beat dying harsh weather too.

  • Even an undisputed master in hypnotism would at least hold eye contact to control the other person’s mind. Dong Lee seems to control the mind with an eye contact that lasts less than minute or even without it. Tell me something… is there a universal mind language? As in Dong Lee as portrayed knew only “Chinese” but was able to control simple “Tamil” minds… Am I missing anything here?

  • Common rhino virus takes at least two to three days to quarantine a individual. A virus recreated from 6th century can show its reach on the host within a day… may be a strong strain… It is a basic instinct to cover nostrils and mouth with at least your hands had you known about some virulent strain in the air… people do that in smoky places to traffic pollution. A star genetic engineering student was too caught up in moving infected people to isolation ward don’t worry about protecting herself… same goes with Dong Lee and the evil professor… Would they already have access to antidote?

  • Genetic memory is made up of instincts developed over a period of time since a species evolved like fire hurts, predators kill, bizarrely colored fruits/vegetables could harm, or able to survive high altitudes with less oxygen… these are not learnt skills like medicine or martial arts.

  • Modern genetic engineering doesn’t have a process to manipulate DNA. Bodhidharma’s medical text in Tamil takes about changing the DNA in 12 days. For some odd reasons, ancient idea was made possible with modern technologies. This superman Bodhidharma also predicted the evolution of 21st century scientific equipment and process… Thamba tells me that if someone soak him in a giant glass tank filled with weird solution for 12 days, he will claim that he could remember the "genetic memory" of Mahendra Varma Pallavan I…

  • Voice of the historical background claims “when others were barbarians, Tamils were civilized”… This is a ludicrous exaggeration. There were other civilizations that existed along with or even before Tamil civilization. This claim sounds like all Tamils are ostentatious racists without substance.
This movie is definitely not a “victory for Tamils all over the world”. It is not my intention to undermine Bodhidharma or Tamil. I’m a very proud “Tamil” just don’t claim that others are stupid. I value my roots and have a strong belief that the precious notes in ancient Tamil texts are not decoded yet. Before singing the glory of the past and add the prerogatives, do something worthy enough of “Tamil”…

P.S. I wrote this post intentionally in English.

From my experience of watching Indian movies, please watch them as a movie and keep all our logic and thinking to ourselves. If we start thinking, then we cannot watch the movie :)
